Automation of Production Processes

Meet Barry Maimon, Robotics Project Manager, and an expert in automation at Dagesh Group. Every time the need arises to optimize processes, Maimon does the research, learns about the subject, and comes up with a built-in automated solution.

What is manufacturing process automation?

RPA – Robotic Process Automation is a technology that makes it possible to replace human actions with a robot or software-operated digital systems.

Automation processes are combined in performing various tasks, such as: assembly, scanning, cleaning, tending, pick-and-place, sanding and deburring machine, and more. RPA robots are designed to optimize work processes in the organization, lighten the workload of machine operators and free them up for other tasks and actions.

Automated Solutions at Dagesh Group

Every automation project that Barry takes on starts with a thought process and answers the question, “why are we working in this way?” Maimon thoroughly investigates the subject, reads the professional literature, learns the theory that serves as the basis of the operation, and once he understands the reasons for the existing way of operation, he develops a mechanical tool (jig) that will assist the worker or the robot that replaces him.

The automated solutions Maimon develops and implements upgrade the quality of the work and provide the worker with maximum comfort through the use of jigs – small adapters aimed at relieving or providing a solution to complement his work. In addition, Maimon makes use of a cobot – a collaborative robot produced by FANUC. This is in fact a smart robot that attaches to a gripper (fingers). The cobot learns the strength required to grasp the tools in order to perform various tasks, such as polishing and processing.

At Dagesh Group, many production processes have been streamlined using automated tools. In every department in which a repeated or gradual action is carried out, Maimon’s automations have rendered the process more efficient. For example, in one of the departments where specific parts have to be polished until they’re shiny, a robot dedicated to this task was set up, saving production time and redirecting workers from the repetitive, Sisyphean task of polishing, to other tasks.

Another example of the use of efficient automation is its implementation in manufacturing processes that take place in hazardous conditions, such as working in especially low or high temperatures or with hazardous materials. For instance, the polishing of stainless steel and aluminum, which produces dust endangers the health of the workers inhaling it; that is performed by a dust-resistant robot, thus protecting the health of the workers and enabling safe and continuous work.

Along with total automated processes, Dagesh Group manufactures complex parts where automation is integrated with manual labor. This means a series of actions that the worker performs, alongside automated actions that support them in their work. For example, the machine operator feeds the robot a catalog number, representing an orderly plan of action, as well as the number of parts in the action, places the part in the right place and allows the robot to complete the operation.

What Automation Means for the Future of Israeli Industry

There is a severe lack of professional manpower and untrained workers in the Israeli labor market. Through the use of automated manufacturing processes, we can streamline processes, increase production quotas and decrease Time to Market. This way, all repetitive actions are directed at cobots (Collaborative Robot), working alongside people. Another advantage of the use of this kind of technology is that, unlike human beings, robots can work 24 hours a day; they don’t get sick, don’t miss workdays, and don’t take breaks. What’s more, the robots are able to reach very high levels of accuracy, maintain consistency in the quality of the products and accomplish the task at high speed and output.

The Future of Automation in the Industry

When people ask Barry Maimon, “will machines soon replace the workforce in factories?” He responds that it’s still too early to know and we have a lot to learn about the field. “What looks promising,” he says, “is that with the rapid growth in the number of workers at Dagesh Group, we’ll always need more working hands.”
